Based on island development, Zhoushan launched the "Hello, Island" International Design Competition for Public Buildings and Art Installations. Taking public architecture and art installations as the leverage for "island practice", the initiative aims to create maritime stories, build a spiritual magnetic field, shape aesthetic island scenes, present the relationship between humans and the ocean, and explore the past and future of the islands. GN Architects reimagines this desirable destination with the concept of "Evolution in Presence".

The Sunlight Theatre is situated on Shengshan Island. Conceived as a magic carpet, the theatre envelops visitors as they enter, quieting the world so that only the stage, the sea and the sky remain in view. The design directs the main sightline southeast to avoid disturbances from the surrounding environment. On ordinary days, the theatre serves as a sunrise viewing platform for island residents to greet the first rays of morning light. During performances, against the backdrop of sunset and starry sky, the audience and performers blend with light, shadow, art, the sea and the sky, forming a romantic scene.

The scheme renovates a bungalow at the site entrance into a service center. Visitors enter through a sunken passageway, ascend steps to the stage—a gateway to a parallel dimension—where everyone becomes the protagonist for three seconds upon arrival. As most of the theatre is elevated, its footprint covers less than one-tenth of the site, preserving the original character of the "Century-Old Fishing Ground". A large number of preserved old fishing boats lend the theatre its profound cultural and humanistic foundation.
