Dongji Wharf Bazaar
Nestled adjacent to the passenger terminal on Miaozihu Island (the main island of Dongji Islands), the Dongji Wharf Bazaar is a vibrant hub infused with coastal wild charm. Serving both local residents and tourists, it integrates ferry waiting, commercial, and catering functions, while also acting as a "public living room" for over 200 local households.
Leveraging the height difference between the original swimming pool base and the seawall, the design adopts a split-level layout to connect the bazaar seamlessly with the passenger terminal. Visitors arriving at the pier access the space via grand staircases on both sides, which lead to terraced sea-view platforms and under the "big umbrella" of the arch shed. The open, permeable spatial layout is ideal for casual strolling and outdoor commerce, while also adapting to the volatile coastal weather.
To withstand typhoons up to Category 15 and wave impacts—key requirements for Dongji's extreme climatic conditions—the building features a concrete arch structure. The design creates multi-layered grey spaces, ensuring flexible operations and comfortable experiences for visitors across different seasons and passenger flows.
